AionTube.com's encoding settings (9/14).

Here at AionTube.com, we're always trying to please you guys: our users! So to make things a bit more transparent, we've decided to reveal AionTube.com's encoding specifications, so you know exactly what our server does to your videos once they've been uploaded. We'll update this information in the future, in case it changes. :)

Remember: these specifications can change at a moment's notice! Currently, however, they're very conservative in the effort to reduce storage and bandwidth consumption. Until I can get a CDN working with osTube, these specs aren't likely to change all too much. CDNs aren't exactly cheap, either.

AionTube.com's conversion settings...
Encoder: mEncoder (mPlayer)
Container: MPEG-4
Codec: x264 (h264)
Bitrate: 1500 kbps (Constant)

Conversion resolution...

Width: 960px
Height: AionTube.com attempts to automatically calculate the correct dimensions of your video, based on it's declared aspect ratio, but sometimes errors occur. Often due to either user error (wrong aspect ratio selected during the original encoding) or poor codec choice (old Windows Media codecs with incorrect support of anamorphism), the encoder may fail and your video may appear stretched or squished! Solution? Tweak your encoder's settings or use a newer/better codec. When in doubt, go for the "square pixel" setting! ;)

So how should you encode your video for upload to AionTube.com? We're glad you asked, because when you improve your encoding technique, you improve AionTube.com's content! Everyone likes clean, crisp, fast-loading videos...right?

Recommended encoding software: TMPGEnc 4.0 or your video editor's built in encoder, if it's capable of estimating variable bitrate video size.

Recommended encoding settings for your videos...
Container: MPEG-4
Codec: h264, XviD, DivX
(All codecs, no matter how new they are, have certain irregularities that may cause odd glitches in the re-encoded files on AionTube.com. Report these errors and we'll try to correct them, if possible.)
Bitrate: preferably variable bitrate to save space, but a constant bitrate video is fine too (use your encoder's calculator to estimate the values needed to make your video fit under whatever AionTube.com's current filesize limit is).

Recommended encoding resolution...

Width: 1280px would be awesome, but anything greater than or equal to 960px will do for now. This is the most important variable listed here, so keep an eye on it in case AionTube.com graduates to full HD video.
Height: Normally dictated by your video's aspect ratio and width.
When in doubt: encode at 720 or 1080p!

I hope this helped anyone who was wondering about AionTube.com's inner workings. If you're confused by anything above, feel free to ask for help in...(this is where we would link to AionTube.com's support forums, but those are under construction at the moment and won't be available for at least a few more days)!

Welcome to AionTube.com!

You're looking at the first video-sharing community dedicated to Aion: The Tower of Eternity, the soon-to-be-released MMORPG by NCsoft. AionTube.com exists solely for its members to share Aion-themed videos with friends and enemies alike, so please report any blatantly off-topic content you find.

AionTube.com runs on the same server that hosts AionBlah.com (along with MarkWilhelm.com and QBasic.com), thus this site is made possible entirely by the donators there. Running a video-sharing site is not easy, requiring massive amounts of storage space, bandwidth, memory, and processing power! Please be patient with us as we work out all the kinks and especially in the future at AionTube.com grows.

While growth is perhaps the most rewarding activity of any community, exponential growth is a death knell for sites like AionTube.com. The massive increase in bandwidth, storage, memory, and CPU cycles required to keep the site running flawlessly is often too much of a financial burden for the webmaster to bear. Many media sites simply fold under the pressure, or intentionally let the server become overburdened and slow to a snail's pace. Neither of those two paths are a valid option for AionTube.com to take. To avoid such outcomes, AionTube.com will eventually either begin using ads, ask for donations, or make subscriptions available. At the moment, however, AionTube.com is operating well within its current server's capabilities. When money becomes an issue, I will make it known. ;)

I just figured out how this silly box works, so please pardon my news tardiness. I'm Mark, ex-AionSource.com admin, and I'll be troubleshooting your AionTube.com upload and conversion errors as quickly as humanly possible. AionTube.com runs on osTube, a professional media-community software designed by AUVICA. Please consider that AUVICA's support staff is located in Germany and that any technical problems I can't handle personally may take several days to resolve. :)
